READING

Critical reading is “a process of evaluation or categorization in terms of some previously accepted standards. [Phew!] It is a logical examination of data which avoids fallacies and judgments on an emotion basis only.”

From our beginnings, we develop cognitive skills that allow us to move through our experiences with reading and viewing. We find our way toward explanation, analysis, evaluation, and–perhaps–appreciation.

Of the many skills (some researchers posit some 180), a short list is worth noting. Readers of this can identify how many you know about what you know, or thought you knew.

DRAWING conclusions
ESTABLISHING sequence; cause and effect
EVALUATING and SOLVING problems
FINDING information (to prove or disprove a statement)

JUDGING reasonableness and relevance
MAKING inferences, judgments
PREDICTING outcomes
RELATING story experience to personal experience

LEARNING THE ALPHABET, in order, is such a skill that is so basic, so important: How would one EVER be able to “look it up” without KNOWING/MEMORIZING the alphabet? [Let’s see: Does “eleemosynary” come before “elementary”?]

“Whatever we read, we must first comprehend and, when we have comprehended, criticize.”

Is there such a thing as a “right” way of literary criticism or critical theory?

Do you want/need a sound (old), “common sense” approach, among so many other “theories”?

David Daiches is (was) one of my critical heroes who told me “there is no single right method of handling literary problems. There is no single approach to works of literary art that will yield all the significant truths about them.” (This certainly goes for movies/film, too.)

I learned (and taught) these five: Historical, Formalist, Sociocultural, Psychological, and Mythopoeic (and maybe something like “Eclectic”).

But, since “art is greater than its interpreters…all criticism is tentative, partial, oblique.” (Studying the five MAY help us find our way.)

Criticism should be a MEANS to greater understanding and appreciation–not an end in itself.
